An unsentimental elegy to the American West, Sweetgrass follows a group of shepherds as they lead their flocks, for the last time, up into Montana's Beartooth Mountains for summer pasture. It is a journey of almost 150 miles through expansive green valleys, by fields of snow, and across hazardous, narrow ridges. The camera records and the images speak for themselves; there are no talking heads, voice-over, or music in Sweetgrass. Devoid of commentary, this astonishingly beautiful yet unsparing film reveals a world in which nature and culture, animals and humans, climate and landscape, and vulnerability and violence are all intimately meshed.
